Just after the 15-minute mark in the second period of Wednesday’s contest, Piche elbowed Wheeling defenseman Cleve Kinley, dropping him to the ice in pain. Piche was given a five-minute elbowing major penalty as well as a game misconduct for the hit, sending him to the locker room early. Under Rule 29 of the ECHL Rule Book, Piche will serve the one-game suspension and pay a fine, which will be given to the ECHL Player’s Hardship Fund under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association. ECHL Director of Officiating Joe Ernst was routinely observing the game at the Lucas County Arena at the time of the incident. The six-foot Piche has contributed two assists, eight shots and 19 penalty minutes in three games with the Walleye this season. The remainder of his time has been spent with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, playing in nine games. Piche was originally signed by the Detroit Red Wings to an entry-level contract back in March.
