Defenseman Ryan Stokes, captain of the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL, is heading to the American Hockey League on loan after signing a professional try-out contract with the Providence Bruins. The Walleye and head coach Nick Vitucci announced the news this afternoon.

Stokes joined the Walleye back in October, signing with the team as a free agent. The Ontario native brought several years of experience playing professionally in the OHL, ECHL and AHL, including a short stint with the Providence Bruins back in the 2008-2009 season.

He was named captain of the Toledo Walleye just hours before their opening game on October 16 along with centers Malcolm MacMillan and Adam Hobson who were named alternate captains.

Stokes has played in all 27 of Toledo’s games thus far on the season, contributing four goals, six assists and 53 penalty minutes. His plus-six rating has also been helpful to the team as they have compiled a 13-10-1-3 record to place second in the American North Division.
